One of the best (under-utilized!) tools to reflect on your body’s nutritional needs: lab work. In addition to a metabolic panel (routinely ordered by a primary care physician), I encourage clients to incorporate comprehensive, functional lab testing. The nutritional wisdom gained through lab analysis allows us to select the best food and supplements to meet our unique needs.
Genova Diagnostics Metabolomix+
I recently completed my own nutritional assessment using this option! The test is mailed to your home, where you complete a urine, blood & saliva sample. Instructions are detailed to help you complete the tests and mail them back to the lab for analysis. My results took just over 2 weeks and were shared via email in a detailed PDF document.
The test is $490 ($475 + $15 physician fee). While it comes with a cost, you can use an FSA/HSA and the results are extremely beneficial for those who need a more in-depth analysis than a standard metabolic panel. Please note: this is not available in NY, NJ or RI.

Function Health
This is an online membership program founded by Dr. Mark Hyman, which allows patients to complete 100+ functional lab tests through Quest Diagnostics. Once subscribed, you will have a user-friendly dashboard to review a comprehensive summary of results and recommendations.
The cost is $499/year and allows for 2 lab visits (more frequent testing incurs additional fees). Repeating labs every ~4-6 months provides an ability to track progress and make continued changes to food / supplements to meet your needs. This membership is a great option (and relatively new)!
